EDUC 551: Science Inquiry for Children in the Natural Environment
Students investigate the natural environment, at Bank Street and the Tiorati Workshop for Environmental Learning in Harriman State Park, to focus on the theory and practice of natural science. Students conduct inquiries under the principle that teachers should learn significant science concepts in ways that they are expected to teach.
Students investigate materials, science concepts, and teaching strategies that are appropriate for preschool and elementary school learners. Class sessions include field explorations at the Tiorati Field Site.

Science 12500: Principles of Life Science: Fall 2019
For undergraduate students who will be elementary school teachers. The goal is for the students to get to know street trees and local arthropods, so that they will be more likely to engage with this biodiversity once they have their own classroom.

For undergraduate students majoring in childhood education. It is an environmental science class designed around GLOBE protocols. It provides students with the tools to do outdoor science education with their students.

NTRES 3800: Climate Solutions – Fernow G24 – Fall 2019
COURSE SUMMARY
Interested in working toward solutions to the climate crisis?
Drawdown’s (www.drawdown.org) list of 100 climate solutions. You will also use principles derived from the social influence literature to persuade one of your social networks to implement the climate action. You will then explore climate policies and write a letter to a government official supporting a particular policy. Throughout the course, you will engage in online discussions with climate activists from 25 different countries who are also implementing climate solutions.

Description. Is the goal of environmental education to instill pro-environmental behaviors, foster collective environmental action, and/or developing healthy and productive citizens? Through short pre-recorded lectures, podcasts, readings, social media, and live webinars, this course will help you define your environmental education goals and learn what the research says is the best pathway to achieve them. Topics include environmental behaviors, collective action, knowledge, values, attitudes, nature connectedness, sense of place, identity, self- and political-efficacy, norms, social capital, health and wellbeing, positive youth development, academic achievement, and resilience. Students diagram their own theory of change outlining how to reach their environmental education goals. Through this course, you will apply research-based knowledge to start new or enhance existing environmental education programs, strengthen your professional networks by exchanging ideas and resources with peer educators and university students around the world, and gain professional credentials.
