Newsblog: Passage of the Environmental Rights Amendment

On Election Day, New Yorkers endorsed the notion that the right to a healthful environment is an enduring value by overwhelmingly approving an amendment to the New York State Constitution which states that β€œEach person shall have the right to clean air and water and a healthful environment.” The amendment passed with nearly 70% of the vote and will be a real boost to the long term quest for a life sustaining environment. Enshrining environmental rights in the state constitution will require lawmakers to consider the impact on air, water and the overall environment when making decisions regardless of the background, zip code or economic class of the citizens affected by their actions.
